Can you imagine what it must feel like to become totally free of all debt? To many people, becoming free and clear of all debt is their number one goal in life, especially those who have become so burdened down with debt that they have been forced to file bankruptcy or seek some other means of relief. These people often make a pact with themselves that they will never build up debt again.

debt-freeBecoming free of debt is a possibility for some people but it is not as easy as it seems. Debt does not include such monthly expenses as rent, phone, & utility bills. Debt is outstanding loans, credit card balances, mortgages, or anything else you must pay each month in order to reduce the amount owed. It is something you are solely responsible for paying just because you signed on the dotted line and got the merchandise or services. If you have a car or house financed, then you have debt. If you have outstanding medical or dental bills, then you have debt.

People who enroll in debt-relief or debt-help programs are often under the impression that, by the time they complete the program, they will finally be debt-free. The only way to accomplish this is by turning every debt you have over to the program so that it can be worked into a monthly payment plan for you. If you should have a house or car that you continue to make payments on, then you will not be totally debt-free by the end of the program. If you keep even one credit card back, you will not be free of debt unless you pay the entire balance owed on the card.

Many times, people will enroll in debt-relief programs and, during the course of the program, take out additional loans. The program will do little to relieve their load as long as they continue to borrow money. The programs have no control over what you, as an individual, do in regards to charging, borrowing, or financing other forms of property or services. Because you are free to do as you like, there will be no guarantees of becoming debt-free once you complete a debt-relief program.

The only way to become totally free of debt is to pay off every single one of your bills and never charge or borrow any amounts of money again. If you can manage to get free of debt, you might manage to stay that way but only if you maintain certain standards in regards to your spending habits. You must have an excellent savings plan and put back rather large amounts of money for all of your emergency needs. You must manage to save amounts large enough to replace automobiles, pay medical bills, handle household repairs, and any other expense that should arise.

If you should decide to embark on a totally debt-free way of life, then you should sit down and make a very realistic budget. Always keep enough money out of each paycheck to pay all of your necessary expenses plus a few small emergencies should they occur. Put the rest of your money into some type of savings plan that will draw interest or another type of account that will earn additional monies as your balance grows. As your savings increases, you will be able to pull from it to handle any unexpected emergencies or large expenses. Just keep in mind that the more money you are able to put aside, the less the chances will be of you having to break down and borrow money for emergencies. It is possible to become totally debt-free if you work hard and learn how to control your spending.
